The Abbeyfield Bradford Society Ltd
is a volunteer-led charity with over
forty years experience of
providing accommodation for the elderly. Our housing services are
designed to enable you to maintain your independence in a secure,
comfortable environment.
A Brief History...
The Abbeyfield
Society was originally founded by Richard Carr Gomm in 1956 when he
opened a house in Abbeyfield Road, Bermondsey - hence the title he gave
to the Society. An association based on this house was formed and within
two years a total of six houses were opened in the London area, accommodating
twenty six elderly people with an average age of nearly eighty.
By the end of 1968 eight London Boroughs had formed Abbeyfield Societies
as well as fifteen areas outside London. Since an essential feature of
the idea was and still is to provide help by voluntary workers for elderly
people in their own communities. |
The Bradford Society is one of the
largest and oldest in the country offering different levels of housing
need for the elderly within its seven houses. It was founded in 1962 and by
1971 had extended to Shipley. In 1996 it merged with the Pudsey Society
adding an additional house. Since 1996 the Society has acquired
three further properties; Kirkview in Shipley, Woodview in Saltaire and
Leylands in Heaton. The Society
plays an important role in providing housing for the elderly in the
local area.
The Abbeyfield aim is to provide
private accommodation for the elderly to enable them to continue
to live in the neighbourhood with the support of a local group of kindly
people and the friendship of their fellow residents. Our
accommodation offers different levels of service enabling elderly residents
to receive continuity according to their changing needs.
