The Abbeyfield Bradford Society Ltd is a volunteer-led charity with over fifty years experience of providing accommodation for the elderly. Our housing services are designed to enable you to maintain your independence in a secure, comfortable environment.
A Brief History... Our Society is a member of The Abbeyfield Society which was originally founded by Richard Carr Gomm in 1956 when a group of volunteers formed a committee which met in Abbeyfield Road (the society was named after that meeting place). That committee became the first Abbeyfield landlord providing housing and support for older people.
In the space of two years, Abbeyfield opened six houses in Bermondsey,
housing 26 older people. By the end of 1960, new Abbeyfield societies
had been formed in eight London boroughs and 15 localities outside of
London. An essential feature of the concept was and still is to provide
help by voluntary workers for elderly people in their own communities. |
The Bradford Society
is one of the largest and oldest in the country offering different levels
of housing need for the elderly within its six houses. It was founded
in 1960 and by 1971 had extended to Shipley. In 1996 it merged with
the Pudsey Society adding an additional house. Since 1996 the Society
has acquired three further properties; Kirkview in Shipley, Woodview in
Saltaire and Leylands in Heaton. The Society plays an important
role in providing housing for the elderly in the local area.
The Abbeyfield aim is to provide private accommodation for the elderly
to enable them to continue to live in the neighbourhood with the support
of a local group of kindly people and the friendship of their fellow residents.
Our accommodation offers different levels of service enabling elderly
residents to receive continuity according to their changing needs.
